Reporting on sustainability activities is a priority for many mid-sized companies, even if it is not mandatory to do so. Adherence to sustainable supply chains and corresponding purchasing decisions are increasingly important to employees and consumers. Banks require detailed information on sustainability activities when approving loans.

All the more reason to start working on a standards-compliant sustainability report today

  • Taking reporting standards as a guide helps with structuring the subject matter.
  • Parts of a sustainability report can also be used for other purposes, such as quotations and tenders, customer enquiries, bank information requests, websites, brochures, management reports, social media and employer branding.
  • Addressing sustainability reporting standards provides wide-ranging impetus for other sustainability-related activities.
  • Communicating sustainability issues can have a positive impact on your company’s reputation with customers, financial institutions and stakeholders.
  • You gain benefits in HR, including in recruitment, retention and motivation.
  • Transparency on sustainability issues can reduce costs by increasing resource and energy efficiency, reducing environmental and social risks and unlocking funding and tax benefits related to sustainability activities.
  • You will be well prepared for when standards-compliant sustainability reporting becomes mandatory.

The path to your first sustainability report

Quotation phase

Initial consultation

We explain the legal framework to you, acquaint you with our approach and discuss with you the added value that structured sustainability reporting can bring to your company.

Quotation

On the basis of our initial consultation, we present you with a detailed quotation including a schedule, milestones and budget estimate.

Engagement confirmation

Once the quotation is approved, you will receive an order confirmation and the project can begin.

Project roadmap

Nachhaltigkeitskonzept

After assembling the internal project team and defining the project objectives with key milestones, we work with you to develop and approve the key points of the sustainability strategy, based on the 17 United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.

Reporting standard

We explain the content together with the advantages and disadvantages of the reporting standards available for selection (such as the GRI, the German Sustainability Code (DNK), and the ESRS), support you in the decision-making process and train the internal project team in the relevant core content of the selected standard.

Sustainability-related materiality matrix

On the basis of the selected reporting standard, we develop and present the materiality matrix for your company.

Information requirements

We identify all the information and data required to prepare the sustainability report in accordance with the selected reporting standard and pre-defined focal areas, and specify the relevant sustainability KPIs.

Data gathering

We use checklist-based interviews to gather all the necessary information and help you set up the relevant reporting systems and data collection processes within your company.

Reporting

Based on the collected data, we prepare and present a draft report in accordance with the selected reporting standard. After coordinating and finalising the sustainability report, we provide recommendations for optimising the project process for the subsequent year’s sustainability report in a final presentation.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS THE CSRD?

The EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) heralds a new era of sustainability reporting in Europe. It significantly expands the content of sustainability reports and the range of companies required to prepare them.

WHAT SHOULD A SUSTAINABILITY REPORT CONTAIN?

All information necessary to understand the sustainability impacts of a company’s activities and the impact of sustainability aspects on its business performance, results and position.

  • An explanation of the company’s business model and strategy with regard to sustainability
  • A description of the company’s sustainability goals and sustainability policy and their outcomes
  • Material risks to which the company is exposed in connection with sustainability aspects and the management of those risks
  • Sustainability-related key performance indicators

WHEN ARE SUSTAINABILITY REPORTS PUBLISHED?

The CSRD requires the sustainability report to be contained in a company’s management report. The same publication deadlines therefore apply as for the annual financial statements.

WHAT IS THE REQUIRED FORMAT FOR SUSTAINABILITY REPORTS?

In accordance with the European Single Electronic Format (ESEF) Regulation, in an electronic and machine-readable report format (XHTML). As part of the management report, the sustainability-related information should also be digitally tagged so that it can be incorporated in the planned European Single Access Point.
